emsCharts Mileage
As some of you are aware the geocoding functionality within emsCharts has not been working
properly. This is causing very serious issues with correct calculations of loaded mileages for
transported patients. Nearly 100% of the charts with mileage are being calculated incorrectly.
emsCharts is actively working on a resolution to this issue, however, they are not able to provide an
ETA on the resolution. It may be a week or weeks.
This obviously poses several issues and is creating a significant amount of work downstream. Most
importantly is our need to maintain compliance with State and Federal regulations regarding mileage
and reimbursement. Effective noon today, automatic mileage calculations within emsCharts has
been turned off. We will be required to collect full starting and ending odometer readings for EMS
responses that involve transport.
• During times when there is a CHS Dispatcher on duty, it will be the responsibility of the crew to
report full odometer readings to the CHS dispatcher at the start and end of the transport, over
the air. A transmission may sound like this: "6089 is transporting to Strong, starting mileage is
7899.3" " 6089 is out at Strong, ending mileage is 7922.9". During times when there is no
CHS dispatcher on duty, the crews will be required to records starting and ending odometer
readings.
• To maintain compliance with, specifically, Federal Regulation, resetting the trip odometer at
the start of transport and recording the mileage at the end of the transport will not be an
option.
• Perhaps putting a note pad and a pen in the cabs of the ambulances could serve as an
engineering mechanism;
